Pilot Project on Responsible Business & Investment in High Risk Areas

Thirteen investors piloted the implementation of UN Global Compact/PRI Guidance on Responsible Business in Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas in a collaborative engagement with five mining companies operating in the DRC, as well as in investors’ individual engagements with companies in high risk areas such as Colombia or Nigeria.

Using the Guidance as a framework, investors were able to deepen their understanding of the local context and hence improve dialogue with invested companies. Over the course of the engagement, companies became increasingly aware of the importance of stakeholder management as well as their role in supporting peace building. Following consultation with local communities, some companies implemented strategic social investments such as enhanced agricultural production systems for local communities. Investors in turn benefited from reduced portfolio risks due to improved risk management and brand building of the invested companies.

Achievements, challenges and lessons learned have been discussed at in-person meetings with companies and will be captured in a publication to provide an advocacy tool, showcase good practice, enhance investor engagement on the issue and provide recognition for leaders.
