The main institution is a non-profit foundation dedicated to the promotion of CSR and SRI (think-tank). The foundation owns Ethos Services, a company providing SRI services (do-tank). Policy: Our SRI approach and objectives are at the heart of our organization since its founding in 1997. Based on the sustainable development concept, we have a threefold SRI-strategy, which includes a) investing with ESG criteria, b) active shareholdership and c) dialog and engagement with entities in which we invest. Principle 1
Principle 1: We will incorporate ESG issues into investment analysis and decision-making processes.

For the purposes of this questionnaire, integration is the consideration of ESG issues alongside traditional financial measures, based on the belief that ESG issues can affect the performance (risk and/or return) of investment portfolios (to varying degrees across companies, sectors, regions, asset classes and through time). Please note that the view that ESG issues can influence investment returns may be based either on

  1. the premise that performance on these issues will eventually be reflected in financial and operational outcomes (revenue growth, margins, etc.) or
  2. the premise that the way in which the market rates or prices the stock will be affected even in the absence of an impact on financial or operational performance. However, exclusion of stocks from portfolios or downweighting them based on the possibility that an association with the stocks may adversely affect the owners profile or brand amongst stakeholders is not regarded as integration.

This question and similar questions relating to each of the other Principles are being asked for three reasons. The first reason is to gather details regarding signatory implementation for inclusion in the PRI annual report on progress. The second reason is to capture activities not captured directly by questions in the Reporting and Assessment Tool. The third reason is to provide context and details to support verification calls.

Ethos is a dedicated SRI provider, meaning that all of our investment services are SRI foucused. The Ethos approach focuses on the long-term orientation of companies and debtors in which it invests its assets. In its investment decisions, Ethos considers ESG-analyses as well as financial sustainability. The foundation is convinced that respecting ESG criteria contributes to increasing the long-term value of a company for shareholders and other stakeholders. In order to evaluate their contribution to sustainable development, companies are analysed based on ESG-criteria. Companies making the greatest efforts are favoured. The portfolio therefore reflects the advantages of companies and sectors that contribute best to sustainable development. The Foundation can also constitute portfolios based on passive/indexed management approaches which respect the Foundation's ethical exclusion criteria. In this case, ESG analyses are used in the exercise of shareholder rights and the active dialog with companies.

The aim should be to bring together both the normative, value-based aspects and the performance aspects in incorporating ESG into investment decisions. Ethical considerations should not be sidelined within the UNPRI. At Ethos we value working also with ethics specialists.

We apply proxy voting systematically for all of our listed equity portfolios. In addition, for our home market we are the leading providor for proxy voting advice. We have our own in-house corporate governance team as well as a proprietory data-base. Where necessary and possible we are also file shareholder resolutions. Finally, we have launched the Ethos Engagement Pool (with 20 institutional members at the end of 2008), through which we have direct engagement contact with companies on ESG issues.

Please explain why you did or did not file or co-file any shareholder resolutions related to RI/ESG issues during 2008:We file shareholder resolutions when issues are of strategic importance, when prior dialogue with company management has not lead to satisfactory results, when it is possible to garner sufficient support from co-filers to overcome the significant barriers to filing resolutions at many companies in Switzerland, and when we see a success potential. In 2008 we filed the shareholder resolution at the UBS EGM because the company did not provide sufficient information on its exposure to the subprime and financial crisis. We also filed during the course of 2008 Say-on-Pay resolutions (for 2009 AGM season, therefore entered under 2009 above)with ABB, CS Group, Nestlé, Novartis and UBS as we believe it is of paramount importance that shareholders be able to express their opinion and take a more acitve part in the discussions and decisions on compensation issues.

This unique vehicle pools the resources and brings together several Swiss institutional investors to systemtically engage Swiss companies on ESG issues. Engagement themes and objectives are selected by the EEP, while engagement activities are coordinated and conducted by Ethos on behalf of its members. The engagement is done systematically on the 100 largested listed Swiss companies. Ethos provides a detailed assessment and report to members of the EEP, which includes quantiative and qualitative measures of success, as well as an analysis of further action required.

We then systematically assess and compare companies across the universe on their disclosure practices. 1.Work to maintain and enhance the credibility of the PRI by ensuring that signatories have a real committment to implement the aspirational principles and make significant and meaningful progress in this regard.
2.It is still very difficult to apply principle 2 to cross-border voting, as our recent experience with our Say-on-Pay resolutions in Switzerland shows. Unfortunatley many practical hurdles remain, especially at the level of sub-custodians. This seems to be an important area where UN PRI might make a contribution.
3.The princples mention explicitly the concept of fiduciary responsibility. We believe the meaning and application of this concept can be further clarified and developed to fully include a socially responsible investment perspective. This seems to be another area where UN PRI might make a contribution.

Principle 1: We will incorporate ESG issues into investment analysis and decision-making processes.Some clients are still seeing ESG incorporation within asset management as incompatible with their fiduciary duty.
Principle 2: We will be active owners and incorporate ESG issues into our ownership policies and practices.Cross-border voting: practical problems and costs for investors that are serious about this.
