Date: 11-16th November 2018

Location: Indonesia and Malaysia

The PRI is organizing an engagement trip to Indonesia and Malaysia in November 2018 as part of the PRI Investor Working Group on Sustainable Palm Oil’s ongoing engagement with companies operating across the palm oil value chain.

This engagement trip is only available to signatories of the PRI who are members of the Investor Working Group on Sustainable Palm Oil. Investors on this trip will meet with a number of companies to better understand how they are managing the ESG risks associated with the palm oil industry. These companies will include palm oil growers, processors and traders, who have been engaged by the investor working group since 2014, as well as a number of Indonesian banks. The trip will also involve attending the RSPO conference. It will be an excellent opportunity for in-person engagement dialogue and to understand more about these companies’ practices.

The Investor Working Group on Sustainable Palm Oil was formed in 2011 and is coordinated solely by the PRI. The aim of the group is to raise awareness amongst investors of the ESG issues that arise in the palm oil value chain, to provide a unified voice in support of sustainable palm oil, and to engage with companies in support of more sustainable practices. Since its creation, investors within the group have been engaging companies across the palm oil value chain to encourage sustainable production, trade and sourcing of the commodity.

The investor working group’s initial focus was on engaging palm oil buyers, however this focus shifted in 2013 to redirect attention to palm oil growers, traders and processors. A short list of companies has been engaged with since 2013, seeking improvements in disclosure, policies and performance regarding sustainable palm oil, this dialogue is still ongoing. The investor working group on sustainable palm oil is now broadening the scope of the engagement to include ASEAN banks, particularly Indonesian, Malaysian and Singaporean banks, who finance the palm oil industry.
