PRI in Person 2023 brought together nearly 1,400 investment professionals.
The theme of this year’s event was ‘moving from commitments to action’.
Over three days in Tokyo, across nearly 40 conference sessions and 50 side events, speakers and delegates came together to learn, network and share knowledge on the latest responsible investment trends, challenges and opportunities.
Following a welcome by Hiroshi Shimizu, President of our Lead Sponsor, Nippon Life Insurance Company, the conference opened with a keynote speech from the Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida. The Prime Minister struck a powerful tone for the event, signalling his commitment to sustainability outcomes and confirming that seven government pension funds will begin the process of signing up to the Principles for Responsible Investment.
The conference covered a wide range of topics, with plenary sessions on the economic transition, the global policy landscape, the climate-nature nexus and the anti-ESG movement. Breakout sessions covered issues such as investor disclosure, sustainability outcomes and stewardship on a range of environmental, social and governance issues. Delegates heard from the new chair of the IPCC, Professor Jim Skea, on the latest climate science, and from the Governor of Tokyo, Yuriko Koike on the city’s efforts to be a global leader on sustainability.
The final session of the conference offered a look at the future, with a keynote speech from Dr Parag Khanna on the implications of global megatrends for investors and society, and a series of insights from five very different industry leaders.
In total, over 150 speakers took part in the main conference programme, with many more participating in side events or other related events as part of Japan Weeks, a programme of events promoting Tokyo as a centre for sustainable finance.
A comprehensive review of this year’s conference agenda has been discussed in a recent blog post by David Atkin, CEO of Principles for Responsible Investment. Delve into the article for a detailed understanding by assessing the PRI in Person 2023 – Moving from commitments to action blog.
